Free SIPOC template for Excel
A SIPOC table with the five columns in place, the same table filled with a worked example, and short instructions. Fill it in with your team at the start of the project, so everyone talks about the same process.
In short
A SIPOC template is a table with five columns — Suppliers, Inputs, Process, Outputs and Customers — that sums up a process on one page. You fill in the process steps first, then the outputs and customers, then the inputs and suppliers.

What is in the file
- —“Template” sheet: the five SIPOC columns with bordered empty rows, ready to fill in on screen or print.
- —“Example” sheet: the same table filled in for a plant that wants new operators to reach standard output sooner.
- —“How to use” sheet: the steps to complete it, in short.
How to use it
- 1Agree where the process starts and ends. The first trigger and the delivery to the customer. Anything outside those two points stays out of the table.
- 2Fill in the Process column first. Four to seven high-level steps, each a verb and an object. No detail yet.
- 3Add outputs and customers, then inputs and suppliers. Work outwards from the process. Customers can be internal.
- 4Review it with the people who do the work. Walk through the table with them. If they do not recognise the process, something is missing.
Frequently asked questions
What does SIPOC stand for?
It is the acronym of the table’s five columns: Suppliers, Inputs, Process, Outputs and Customers.
In which order do you fill in a SIPOC?
Start with the process steps, then the outputs and customers, and finish with the inputs and suppliers. Starting from the suppliers tends to describe what arrives rather than what the customer needs.
Excel or a dedicated tool?
For a single project, a spreadsheet does the job well. When several projects run at once, LeanOS — a web app for DMAIC projects — keeps each charter, its KPIs and its actions linked, with a portfolio view across projects, and its free plan covers one project.
