LeanOS vs statistical software for improvement projects
Statistical software and LeanOS solve different problems within an improvement project. This page sets out what each does well, so you can decide whether you need one, the other or both.
In short
Statistical software — desktop or cloud packages used in Six Sigma for hypothesis tests, regression, design of experiments, control charts and capability analysis — answers questions about process data; LeanOS is a web app for managing DMAIC projects, where the charter, KPIs and actions of every project live in one linked record and roll up to a portfolio view.
| Aspect | Statistical software | LeanOS |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Statistical analysis of process data. | Running and following improvement projects from charter to control. |
| Statistics | Their strength: hypothesis tests, regression, design of experiments, capability analysis. | Not a statistics package; the analysis stays in the tool your team already trusts. |
| Project structure | Analyses are organised by the user; not built specifically around the DMAIC phases. | Every project follows the DMAIC phases, with the same tools in each. |
| Charter, KPIs and actions | Outside the scope of the statistical analysis itself; you can keep them in separate files or another tool. | One record per project, with the charter, KPIs and actions linked. |
| KPIs | Detailed charts and control charts built from the data you load. | Baseline, interim milestones and trend for each KPI. |
| Root cause and control | Statistical evidence for a cause, once the data is collected. | 5 Whys and Ishikawa inside the project, and a control plan with the KPI, owner and frequency of each control. |
| Portfolio view | Not the focus of a statistics package. | A portfolio dashboard and one table of every project, filterable by phase, owner and health. |
| Drafting help | Varies by product; not built specifically for writing improvement project documents. | An AI copilot drafts the charter and proposes actions; the team reviews every proposal, and it can be switched off. |
| Cost | Licensing varies by product; check current terms with each vendor. | Free plan for one project; paid plans for teams. |
When statistical software is the right tool
When the question is statistical — is this difference real, which factors drive the defect rate, is the process capable — a statistics package is the right tool, and LeanOS does not try to replace it.
Black Belts running designed experiments or detailed capability studies will keep needing statistical software, whatever they use to manage the project.
When a project tool adds something
Statistics answer one step of a project. Around it sit the charter, the sponsor, the actions with owners and dates, the KPIs followed after the change, and the report to management.
When several projects run at once, that surrounding work is where time goes. One way to split the work: keep your statistical software for the analysis and move the project record — charter, KPIs, actions, control plan — into LeanOS.
This comparison describes statistical software as a category in general terms; individual products differ, so check each product’s current features.
Frequently asked questions
Does LeanOS replace statistical software?
For managing improvement projects, it can. For deep statistical analysis, no: LeanOS is not a statistics package, and the two can be used side by side.
Can I bring results from my statistical software into LeanOS?
Yes, by hand: there is no automatic import. The conclusions of an analysis — the confirmed cause, the new baseline — go into the project, next to the charter, KPIs and actions.
Is there a free way to try LeanOS?
LeanOS has a free plan for one user and one project, enough to run a complete project alongside your current tools.
